WHAT DO YOU GET IF HYPERTENSION IS UNTREATED?

STROKE- your artery in the brain gets blocked or ruptures from very high blood pressure.
BLINDNESS- the changes in the artery of the brain also holds true for the arteries in the eyes.
They can also get blocked or ruptured if blood pressure is not controlled for a long
                       period of time.
HEART ATTACK- can occur if the blood vessels in the heart get blocked. The heart muscles
"starves" of oxygen leading to death of heart muscles.
HEART FAILURE - the heart gets tired of pumping because of the high blood pressure. It has
to counteract this high pressure to be able to pump blood out to the body.
KIDNEY FAILURE- the small blood vessels in the kidney get blocked resulting to ineffective
filtering of the blood by the kidneys. Kidney failure leads to poisoning of the whole
body from undisposed waste body products.

WAYS TO MINIMIZE EXPOSURE TO SUN RADIATION

Avoid sun exposure. The sun's are strongest between 10am to 2 pm.
Avoid reflected sunlight from sand, pavements, or snow.
Apply sunscreens with sun protection of at least SPF 15 (Sun Protection
Factor). This should be repeated throughout the day if exposure
               is continuous.
Use sunscreens with prolonged exposure to artificial light sources such
as fluorescent lamps, welding arcs, cold quartz or bactericidal
               lamps.
Wear protective clothing to reduce skin absorption of the radiation.
Smoke and smog in large cities only partially screens UVB rays so
you also have to be protected.
       Use wide-rimmed hats or umbrellas.

CLEANING PLANT LEAVES

      Dust with a feather duster.
Glycerine is one of the best substances to use if you wish to put a
gloss on the leaves of your plants.
Put a few drops of glycerine on a cloth and swab the leaves with it.
It is much better than olive oil or mayonnaise, since it is not a dust
             collector.
A half and half mixture of milk and water also makes a fine solution for
              glossing leaves.

YOUR FIRST AID KIT

You should have a first-aid box.
Why not a shelf of supplies, or a medicine cabinet?
Because a box can be totted along if you rush
from top floor bathroom to basement, or
when you go on a camping trip.
If you have a cabinet of supplies, put some in a
medium-size box and you're off to a good start.
What to put in the box?
Adhesive tape - to hold bandages in place.
Bandages - of three sizes; remember, time marches on.
Scissors - to cut bandages and tapes.
Soap - to clean a wound, scratch or cut in place of an antiseptic.
Merthiolate and tincture - of iodine to apply on cuts after washing.
Tweezers - to remove splinters or a stingers.
A Flash light - in case of a brownout.
Rubbing Alcohol - for sterilizing instruments.

PRE-CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY TIPS

Getting worried about what to do, what to give this Christmas?
      Here are some tips:
      Check your address list.
      Start writing your family early.
If this is not your custom, why not plunge in this year?
Allow plenty of time for your letter to be written; everything
seems to take more time than you expect it to.
Look for attractive bowls, boxes and other containers for
food gifts-a red and green plate, perhaps, or a small tray
              shaped like a star.
Collect jokes, samples and small items for stocking stuffers or
as presents to tie on the tree or to decorate packages.
Cook holiday foods that will keep (marmalade, fruitcake) or
freeze well (casseroles). Wrap with cake.

PREVENTING TOOLS FROM RUSTING

Oiling work tools after use is certainly the rust proofing, although
this makes your work sticky and messy.
Your other alternative is to place a piece of charcoal, chalk or
several moth balls in your toolbox to absorb any moisture.

CLEAN YOUR CANDLE BRIGHT

Soiled candle will look like new if you clean it with a cloth
             damped with kerosene.
Rub candle up and down and finish off with a light rubbing
with a tissue paper to have that lustrous sheen.

WATERING SMALL TERRARIUMS

To avoid smudges and dripping water onto floor and furniture,
water small terrariums with your basting syringe.
      Don't dispose off disposable syringes.
Store them inside your garden tool cabinet  for future use.
Very handy, too for reaching out crevices when applying
insecticides.

REMOVING INK SPOTS

To remove ink from varnished wood, rub a soft cloth
filled with a solution of equal parts. of vinegar and linseed oil.
To take it off plaster, you literally have to remove a little
of the plaster and replace it with sparkling.

AUTOMATIC LIGHT SWITHCH

Connect the lamp socket's pull chain to a screw hood fastened at the top of the door near the hinges a coil spring or rubber bands and a cord to extend its length.
As you open the door, the chain is enough to turn on the light while the spring coil stretches and allows
the door to swing fully.
The process extinguishes the light when you open the door to leave the room.

TOOTHPASTE WHITENS PIANO KEYS

To remove unsightly spots on your piano keys, apply toothpaste.
to a well-dampened cloth and rub the keys well.
Wipe dry and buff with a clean, dry, soft cloth.

KITCHEN MIRROR

If your kitchen lacks a window add one.
Hang a mirror on the wall above the kitchen sink and frame it
with pretty kitchen curtains.
It even gives more light from reflections, thus making the
kitchen brighter.
The curtain dressed up the "window" too.
      Another thing:
Suppose you are up to the neck whipping up something for
dinner and a guest rings the bells.
With the mirror before you, you needn't have to rash upstairs
to groom yourself.

TRAINING YOUR PET DOG TO RELIEVE HIMSELF

Until you are there to stop the dog as he begins to relieve himself, it is useless to correct him
A young dog's intelligence is quite limited to understand this.
As the dog starts to relieve himself at a place other than that designated for the purpose, say No!
firmly, bringing him immediately to the proper place.
Allow him to finish his act over sheets of newspapers.
Do't forget to give him a great deal of praise after wards.

.

SETTING UP YOUR FIRST AQUARIUM

A five-gallon tank set-up is pretty small to accommodate the number of fish you wish to have.
If you are an enthusiastic fish collector buy a bigger tank.
A 20-30 gallon tank is roomy.
Be sure that the tank includes, among others, hinged lighted hood to keep fish from jumping
out, filter, air pump and thermostatically-controlled heater.
Have some rocks and gravel to line the bottom.
Live plants add beauty to the aquarium, also provide hiding places for fish.
When you buy plans, buy an inexpensive reflector to give them adequate lighting.
Don't forget to inquire about the kind of fish for the tropics.
Also ask the storekeeper for tips on fish care, including how often to change the water.
Will the fish survive the chlorine content of the water?
How much and how often will you feed the fish? etc.

REMOVING SMOKE AND GREASE FROM WOODWORK

Paint the wood with a solution ot starch and water.
When it has dried, rub off with a soft brush or clean cloth.

WHEN YOUR FREEZER BREAKS DOWN

When power failure hits your place unplug the refrigerator and all those appliances.
Don't get tempted to open the refrigerator if you have nothing important. to get.
Keep the door closed; opening it lets the cold air out and the warm air in.
Food in a partially full freezer will stay frozen for 24 hours; a fully packed freezer for
             two days.
If breakdown will be longer, buy some dry ice to put in the freezer and some other
             parts of the fridge.

CLEANING THE FLAT IRON

To remove burned-on spots on your flat iron with a heated solution of vinegar and salt.
To remove wax build-up, rub with very fine sandpaper then polish with a piece of fine
soapless steel wool and wipe off with a damp cloth.
Toothpaste or silver polish will do a great cleaning job.
And to remove mineral deposits from the inside of your steam iron, fill it with equal
parts of whites vinegar and water.
Let it steam for a few minutes then disconnect and set for an hour.
Empty and rinse with clean water.

GREEN THUMB TIPS

The sky-high prices of vegetables should give you the signal it's time grow your own.
To start with, we give you a couple:
          1.   Plant tomatoes, they rich in vitamin C.
They can be grown in your backyard or in pots where the sun shines.
          2.   And don't be afraid to prune those tomato vines and prune them hard.
When the plans  reach a height of 12 inches, cut off the ends of their
                 branches as illustrated.
Continue to snip back suckers every few days leaving only the main stems.
That will make you the proud owner of the ugliest tomato plants in the world.
But wait and see, the yield will be amazing.

ATTRACTIVE DOORKNOBS

Give your doors a beauty treatment for the season.
Here's how to have new doorknobs for free.
Just take all the knobs that are on the inside of closets
or other doors where they don't get much wear and
tear and put them on the outside.
The outside ones go on the inside.
After all, who sees an oil knob on the inside of a door?
All it takes is a little time and a trusty old screwdriver.

CHAPPED LIPS

Dry chapped lips are not only irritating; they look bad enough to drive away your
boy next door!
      What to do?
Place a warm, wet face towel between your lips to get water into the skin.
Leave towel for at least five minutes.
Then apply a coating of petroleum jelly.
Repeat until your lips turn soft and inviting..

ECONOMIZE ON MATTRESS

Probably not all of us can afford new mattresses once the old ones get deformed
because of deep paddling at a place or two.
A good salesman will suggest that you turn your new mattress once a month for the
first few months.
More often than not, deep 'holes' form because you are prone to sleep on your
favorite side of the bed.
Turning the mattress regularly helps even-up padding.

REMOVING STARCH FROM IRON

An easy way to get rid of burned starch on the sole-plate of your iron is to iron over table salt sprinkled
onto waxed paper.
And smoother sole-plate you can depend on practical grandma's sure-fire technique.
She runs iron over banana leaf before ironing clothes.
The natural oil the leaf contains adheres to the plate.
